Báo chí Haiti ngày 18/2 đưa tin một nhóm người nước ngoài có trang bị vũ khí bán tự động đã bị cảnh sát bắt giữ, sau nhiều ngày diễn ra biểu tình chống chính phủ.

Bộ Ngoại giao Mỹ cũng đã nhận được thông tin rằng 5 công dân nước này nằm trong số những người bị cảnh sát Haiti bắt. Phía cảnh sát Haiti vẫn chưa có phản hồi lại yêu cầu đưa ra lời bình luận.
Theo tờ báo Le Nouvelliste của Haiti, nhóm người gồm 7 người nước ngoài và một công dân Haiti bị bắt vào tối ngày 16/2. Cảnh sát tìm được súng trường, súng lục, các thiết bị bay không người lái và điện thoại vệ tinh trong hai chiếc xe của họ, tờ báo cho biết.
Ngoài công dân Mỹ, nhóm người này còn có một người Serbia và một người Nga.
Báo chí Haiti cũng công khai danh tính của các công dân Mỹ. Một quan chức ngoại giao Mỹ giấu tên cho biết các công dân Mỹ bị bắt ở nước ngoài sẽ được nhận hỗ trợ lãnh sự tương ứng.
Haiti vừa trải qua nhiều ngày chìm trong biểu tình đòi Tổng thống Jovenel Moise từ chức và yêu cầu mở điều tra liên quan đến quỹ của thỏa thuận PetroCaribe, một thỏa thuận giữa các nước Caribbean và thành viên OPEC Venezuela.
Bộ Ngoại giao Mỹ tuần trước đã ra lệnh cho các nhân viên không thuộc các bộ phận quan trọng tại Haiti cùng người thân quay về nước và khuyến cáo người dân không nên du lịch đến đây.
Americans among group arrested in Haiti with arsenal of guns: media
(Reuters) - Haitian police arrested a group of foreign nationals, including five Americans, armed with semi-automatic weapons, Haitian newspapers reported on Monday, adding to uncertainty in the impoverished Caribbean country after days of anti-government protests.
The U.S. State Department was aware that Haitian police arrested a group that included U.S. citizens, an official at the department said on Monday. Haitian police did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Haitian newspaper Le Nouvelliste reported that seven foreigners and a Haitian were in the group picked up by police on Sunday night. Police found rifles, pistols, drones and satellite phones in their two vehicles, the newspaper said.
Other media said several of the men were U.S. citizens, one was Serbian and another from Russia.
Haitian newspapers printed names that corresponded to social media profiles of U.S. citizens claiming military backgrounds.
The State Department official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said U.S. citizens arrested overseas were entitled to appropriate consular assistance. The official declined to provide further comment, citing privacy.
Reuters was not immediately able to independently confirm the identities of the arrested men.
Since Feb. 7, thousands of demonstrators have called for President Jovenel Moise to resign and for an independent probe into the whereabouts of funds from the PetroCaribe agreement, an alliance between Caribbean countries and OPEC member Venezuela.
The State Department last week ordered the departure of all non-emergency U.S. personnel and their families from Haiti, and advised U.S. citizens not to travel there.
