Một ngày sau khi vụ việc xảy ra, một sĩ quan cảnh sát thuộc văn phòng giao thông địa phương được phát hiện đã chết tại tầng hầm sở cảnh sát Harajuku với vết bắn vào đầu và tay vẫn còn cầm súng, theo thông tin của cảnh sát thành phố Tokyo.
Hiện sở cảnh sát Tokyo đang tiến hành điều tra nguyên nhân.
Đài truyền hình quốc gia NHK cho biết viên cảnh sát này là người được phân công điều tiết giao thông tại khu vực gần hiện trường xảy ra vụ đâm xe, ngay thời điểm Giao Thừa, sau đó anh ta đã phải chịu đựng nhiều phiền nhiễu tại nơi làm việc và đã quyết định để lại thư tuyệt mệnh sau đó tự sát, nhưng NHK không tiết lộ nội dung bức thư tuyệt mệnh.
Thủ phạm hiện đã bị bắt và kết tội cố ý giết người. Dù hắn đã tuyên bố hành động này là để “trả đũa án tử hình” nhưng động cơ thực sự vẫn chưa được làm rõ.
Tokyo policeman commits suicide after New Year car attack
(AFP) - Tokyo police are investigating the suicide of an officer in charge of traffic control near the scene of a New Year's Eve car ramming attack that injured nine people, police and media said.
The attack in Tokyo's famed Harajuku fashion district saw 21-year-old Kazuhiro Kusakabe drive a vehicle into crowds, leaving at least one person with serious injuries.
The day after the incident, a 36-year-old officer from the local traffic department was found dead in the basement of Harajuku police station, according to Tokyo police.
"The officer was bleeding from his head. He had a gun in his right hand and one bullet had been fired from the gun," a Tokyo police spokesman told AFP on Monday.
"We're investigating why this happened," he said, without elaborating further.
Public broadcaster NHK reported, citing police sources, that the officer had been in charge of traffic control near the district where the attack occurred moments into the new year.
The broadcaster said the policeman had been suffering from harassment at work, and reported he left behind a suicide note, without giving details of its contents.
The attacker, who reportedly drove the vehicle from near the western city of Osaka, is under arrest on suspicion of attempted murder.
He has reportedly told police he was acting in "retribution for the death penalty", but the specifics of his motive remain unclear.
