Bộ này trong một thông cáo cho hay, hai con tàu đã xuất hiện tại vùng eo biển Đài Loan sáng 25/2 và rời đi sáng nay.
Quân đội Đài Loan đã nắm trước thông tin về sự xuất hiện của hai chiến hạm này và nói có khả năng bảo vệ an toàn lãnh hải cũng như không phận, thông cáo cho biết thêm.

Hành động này được dự báo sẽ gặp phải phản đối gay gắt từ phía Bắc Kinh khi dưới góc độ nào đó đây được xem như một sự thể hiện ủng hộ hòn đảo tự trị này từ chính quyền Trump.
Sự xuất hiện của hai tàu hải quân Mỹ diễn ra chỉ một ngày sau khi Trump tuyên bố hoãn áp thuế mức thuế 200 tỷ USD cho hàng Trung Quốc xuất khẩu, là sự kiện đã được ấn định ngày có hiệu lực là 2/3.
Bắc Kinh cũng nhiều lần yêu cầu Washington cắt quan hệ quân sự với Đài Loan khi xem đảo quốc này là một phần lãnh thổ cần lấy lại và sẽ dùng vũ lực để sáp nhập nếu cần.
Hạm đội Thái Bình Dương của Mỹ đã công khai để tàu di chuyển tới khu vực này với lý lẽ rằng hành động này đơn giản thể hiện thỏa thuận của Mỹ về một khu vực “Ấn Độ - Thái Bình Dương tự do và cởi mở”.
Hai tàu hải quân này gồm một tàu khu trục Stethem và tàu vận tải Cesar Chavez.
Mỹ không có mối quan hệ chính thức với Đài Loan nhưng có sự ràng buộc vì là nguồn cung cấp vũ khí chính của nước này. Từ 2010 đến nay, Đài Loan đã mua vũ khí của Mỹ với tổng trị giá lên đến hơn 15 tỷ USD.
Taiwan reveals two US Navy ships’ strait operation and says island can defend its territory
(SCMP) - The Taiwan defence ministry said on Tuesday that it had closely monitored two US Navy vessels which sailed through the Taiwan Strait.
The ministry said in a statement that the two vessels had sailed through the strait on Monday and left on Tuesday morning.
Taiwan’s military was fully aware of the passage of the US vessels, and is capable of defending its maritime territory and airspace security, the statement said.
The operation is expected to trigger a strong reaction from Beijing, because it is likely to be viewed as a show of support to the self-ruled island from US President Donald Trump’s administration.
It also came a day after Trump announced he would halt tariff rises on US$200 billion worth of Chinese exports to the US, which had been scheduled to take effect from March 2.
Beijing has repeatedly demanded that Washington cut off all military ties with Taiwan, which Beijing regards as a breakaway province to be taken back by force if necessary.
US Pacific Fleet made the operation public in a statement overnight, saying “the ships’ transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the US’ commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific”.
The two ships were the destroyer Stethem and navy cargo and ammunition ship Cesar Chavez, the US statement added.
Washington has increased its support to the island in the lead-up to this year’s 40th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act, the US Congress’ legislation defining unofficial relations with Taiwan after it switched its diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979.
The US has no formal ties with Taiwan, but is bound by law to help defend the island and is its main source of arms. Washington has sold Taiwan more than US$15 billion of weaponry since 2010, according to the US defence department.
