Ý nghĩa và cách sử dụng lượng từ trong tiếng Anh

Có rất nhiều từ, cụm từ mang ý nghĩa định lượng trong tiếng Anh. Bài viết hôm nay sẽ giới thiệu tới các bạn các lượng từ đặc biệt, thường được sử dụng trong cả văn nói lẫn văn viết.

1. Ý nghĩa và cách sử dụng các lượng từ đặc biệt 

1.1 All (tất cả)

Dùng để chỉ 2 người hoặc vật trở lên hoặc một nhóm người/ vật. “All” mang nghĩa chủ động và luôn theo sau là một động từ số nhiều.

Ex:

  • All the students passed the test. All of them were very happy.
  • All that he said was untrue.

Note: All + that clause means “everything” (tất cả) and takes a singular verb (đi với động từ số ít)

1.2 Both (cả hai)

Dùng để chỉ 2 người hoặc vật. “Both” mang nghĩa chủ động và luôn theo sau là một động từ số nhiều.

Ex: Both Ann and Kate are sixteen. Both girls are sixteen.

1.3 Whole (=complete) (suốt, toàn bộ)

Được sử dụng với danh từ đếm được số ít.

Chúng ta sử dụng: a, the, this, my, etc. + whole + countable noun.

Note:

  • the whole week = all the week/ all week
  • all the sugar (NOT: the whole sugar)

1.4 Either (any one of two) (cái này hoặc cái kia/ người này hoặc người kia trong số 2 cái)

Dùng để chỉ 2 người hoặc vật. Được sử dụng trước danh từ đếm được số ít.

Note: Either of: có thể theo sau là động từ số ít hoặc số nhiều.

Ex:

  • Either store is fine with me.
  • Paul and David promised to help me. I like either of them to help me.

1.5 Neither (not one and not the other) (không ai/ cái nào trong số 2 cái)

Dùng để chỉ 2 người hoặc vật. Được sử dụng trước danh từ đếm được số ít.

Note: Neither of : có thể theo sau là động từ số ít hoặc số nhiều.

Ex:   

  • Neither man is rich.
  • Neither of them is/ are rich.

1.6 None (không ai/ không cái nào trong số nhiều người/vật (hơn 2))

Dùng để chỉ 2 người hoặc vật trở lên. Nó có nghĩa phủ định và không theo sau bởi danh từ.

Note: None of: có thể được dùng với “các danh từ, his, them, etc.” và được theo sau bởi động từ số ít hoặc số nhiều.

Ex:   

  • “Are there any more tickets?” “No, none.”
  • Sally, Helen and Sue haven’t been to Madrid. None of the girls has/ have been to Madrid.

1.7 Both … and…(Cả….và…..)

Được theo sau bởi động từ số nhiều.

Ex: Both David and Peter are students.

1.8 Either ….or …. (hoặc ….hoặc…) / Neither … nor … (không … mà cũng không …)

Động từ chia ở số ít hay số nhiều phụ thuộc vào chủ ngữ đứng sau “or” hay “nor”.

Ex:

  • Either Ann or Mary goes to the party.
  • Neither Carol nor his friends are here.

1.9 Every (mỗi, một)

Được sử dụng với danh từ đếm được số ít. “Every” dùng để chỉ một nhóm người hoặc vật, và có ý nghĩa là “ all”, “everyone”, “everything”, etc.

Ex: Every student was given a certificate at the end of the course. (all students)

1.10 Each (mỗi)

Dùng với danh từ đếm được số ít và động từ số ít. “Each” có ý nghĩa là “one by one”, được xem như là từng người/ từng cái riêng lẻ.

Ex: Each trainee should attend a three-month course. (all trainees considered individually).

2. Một số bài tập sử dụng lượng từ

Exercise 1: Bold the correct item.

1.    Both / Either Frank and Joe are on the basketball team.
2.    Have you done all / whole your homework?
3.    Neither / Both Brenda nor Beth can drive a car.
4.    Brian has been studying for his Chemistry exam all / whole week.
5.    We listened carefully to every / each word the teacher said.
6.    Mark and his friends went to the bowling alley yesterday. They both / all had a great time!
7.    Megan practises the piano every / either day after school.
8.    None / Either of the students knew how to answer the last question in the test.
9.    Tom was hungry, so he ate the whole / all pizza.
10.  Ben and Akira spend all / whole of their free time playing video games.
11.  Alisha’s mother bought her two blouses but she doesn’t like either / neither of them.
12.  He had a bottle in every / each hand.

Exercise 2: Use both/ neither / none / all (of them) and write the sentences.

1.    Tracy and Sarah haven’t seen the film.
